Tanba Tachikui Pottery is a renowned pottery that Japan takes a great pride in. With a long history of 800 years, Tanba pottery is one of the Japanese typical and ancient kilns. The production of its ceramics follows a truly handmade process, each piece, one by one, being placed on the stand and left to dry completely. They are then fired in the“Noborigama”, the stepped chambers kiln, for 60 hours. Under the high temperature of 1300 degrees, the ashes and smoke in the kiln create the“Haikaburi” or color variations and patterns on the surface of each ceramic piece. These color variations and patterns are the distinctive characteristic of this pottery. Besides it, another appealing feature of Tanba pottery is the alteration of the look of the ceramic pieces caused by the changes in the color and patterns with its continued use. In 1978, under the denomination of Tanba Tachikui Pottery, it was designated as a Japanese Traditional Craft. Such important designation implied the recognition of the beauty of this pottery. Artistically, Tanba pottery has also gained a high reputation.Keiichi Shimizu is a Tanba potter of KanetoGama kiln, that has been awarded with many distinguished prizes.
